About New Westminster, British Columbia, Canada
New Westminster, BC
In 2009, the city of New Westminster introduced a pilot project called the Wheelability Map, an initiative designed to improve mobility and enhance active transportation options for people who rely on scooters, wheelchairs, walkers, walking sticks and other mobility aids. Covering uptown and downtown New Westminster, the Map was compiled based on feedback from two assessments and a survey of 121 mobility aid users.
The results of the project have been tremendous. The City has allocated $50,000 on an annual basis to undertake accessibility upgrades, including curb ramp installation and replacement. Funds have also been allocated for sidewalk upgrading and replacement. A review of transportation infrastructure as it relates to “wheelability” has resulted in the discontinuation of inlaid decorative brick in sidewalks. New Westminster is committed to being one of the most “wheelable’ cities in British Columbia.
